THE PACKING LIST

READ THIS: Packing (light) tips for your next adventure

GENERAL THINGS TO CONSIDER

*This is an active trip with lots of time outdoors, in the heat. However, some dinners will be on the “nice” side, so make sure you have a set or two of regular clothing in addition to your running gear.

*Any type of luggage is fine, but remember: no one ever wishes they’d brought more stuff! Stick to the essentials and pack only what you need. A good rule of thumb: if your luggage is too big or too heavy for you to carry it all yourself, it’s too much stuff!

*Have some sort of ‘day bag,’ whether it’s a small backpack, messenger bag, etc. It should be big enough to carry money, a camera, a water bottle, and a jacket – something you can keep with you in the vehicle.

*You don’t need a different running outfit for every day. You can easily re-wear a few items throughout the trip, and a rinse-out in the shower keeps things clean enough - ample sunshine and dry air will dry it out quickly! Please do not plan or rely on the chance to do laundry.

CLOTHES

*3 pairs running shorts

*3-4 short sleeve running shirts/tank tops + jog bras and 1-2 long sleeve running shirts (good for sun protection!)

*2-3 non-running shirts/tops
*2-3 pairs non-running pants/shorts/skirts (make sure you have at least one pair of long pants)

*1 warm jacket (down or fleece - nighttime temps in the mountains can dip near the freezing mark!)

*1 lightweight run jacket

*Underwear

*Sleepwear
*swimsuit

ACCESSORIES + SHOES

*1 pair trail running shoes + 1 pair flip flops +  1 pair non-running shoes

*5-6 pairs socks

*Running hat

*Sunglasses

*Day bag

*Shower towels are provided by the hotels but please bring a small pack towel for sweat/post run swimming.

*Hydration pack that can carry a minimum of 1L of water (please note that a handheld is rarely enough in this climate)

TOILETRIES

*Shampoo/soap/conditioner

*Toothbrush/toothpaste

*Brush/comb

*Feminine products

*Razor

*Contacts/solution if needed

*Sunblock

*Lotion + chapstick - it's dry!

*Moleskin or KT tape for blisters/hotspots

*Any other medication you may need (we have a well-stocked first aid kit for unexpected situations)

DOCUMENTS

*Passport with at least 6 months validity

*1-2 credit/debit cards (make sure to call your bank prior to departure and tell them the dates that you will be in Mexico - this way they won’t put a security hold on your card).

OTHER STUFF

*Phone/camera + charger

*Reading material

*Journal/pens if desired

*Ear plugs if you are a light sleeper
*Electrical adapter if traveling from outside North America: Mexico uses Type A & B outlets (2 flat prongs with or without ground just like in the US)

MONEY - HOW MUCH WILL YOU NEED?

Most everything is already paid for, but you'll likely want to purchase alcohol and other personal purchases along the way. Credit cards are generally accepted in towns, but cash is always handy and easy to grab at an ATM in the airport. At the time of writing $1USD = 20 pesos

> Alcohol, coffee and other drinks/snacks that you might find along the way. Expect sodas to cost about $1-2, coffeeshop coffee $3-4, a beer $3-5, cocktails/wine $10+ (note that coffee will always be provided with breakfast!) - very similar to the prices you see in the US!

> Souvenirs: You may come across goods produced by local artisans and designers that you want to purchase as souvenirs, particularly in Todos Santos; prices run the gamut and it's tough to know what you'll spend, but there is ample ATM access there if needed!

>
Tips. Your entire trip will be spent with guides & drivers who go above and beyond to create an amazing experience for you. While tips are never expected, it’s always appreciated if you enjoyed your experience; any gratuities will be split evenly amongst the team.

BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR: THE BASICS

Country: Mexico

Language: Spanish

Currency: Peso ($1 USD = 17 pesos at time of writing)

Landscapes:
White sand beaches, turquoise water, Pacific sea cliffs, rugged mountains and tons of cactus!

Food:
Breakfasts will generally be served at our accommodation and offer plenty of options from pastries and fruit to a variety of egg dishes. Post-run lunches will be casual and delicious; we’ll visit some of our favorite local spots where you’ll find a wide range of tacos, quesadillas, tostadas, cold beer and fantastic salsa bars and also enjoy a gourmet oceanfront post-run feast one day. Dinners will be multi-course affairs, from an award-winning farm-to-table restaurant and a sunset dinner on the beach to a private dinner hosted at a family vineyard and a couple of memorable feasts overlooking the Sea of Cortés. You can expect exceptionally fresh seafood, sustainably raised local meat, plenty of healthy veggies and vibrant Baja flavors.

Seafood features heavily in Baja cuisine, but there can be other arrangements made for those who don’t eat it. Most special diets - vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free - can be accommodated, but if you require a combination of special requirements please check with us before signing up so that we can ensure that we’re able to provide acceptable meals with the ingredients available.

Drinks:
Expect a wide selection of beers (both local and craft), inventive cocktails at all of our dinner spots,  lots of agua fresca, plenty of good coffee and TONS of Topo Chico!

Tap water is not considered safe for drinking, though it's fine for brushing your teeth and whatnot; we will make sure you have easy access to bottled water throughout the trip, and we always encourage people to travel with a personal filter to reduce plastic waste. There are many travel-friendly filtration systems that allow you to safely drink tap water - we're personal fans of Grayl bottles and Steripens.

Weather:
December is about as good as it gets in this part of the world! Typical high temperatures are around 75F / 24C while lows are around 50-60F / 10-15C (though it can occasionally dip near the freezing mark at night in the mountains!). Sunshine is abundant and the climate is very dry - expect very little humidity and an exposed landscape that makes your time on the trail feel quite a bit hotter than expected!

Connectivity:

You can expect decent wifi every night and those with international data coverage should stay pretty well connected for the first five days; our lodge for the final two nights has wifi, but NO cell coverage!

Highly recommend, just do it! Absolutely amazing experience I'll never forget. We were well looked after by Michael, Tone and Alain every step of the way! Runs were amazing with regular stops for food and drinks should you need them. Everyone on the trip was lovely and friendly. Food and wine was next level, accommodation great. Flora our host was also such an amazing person with such passion for running! Thank you all!

What an incredible trip! My fourth Rogue Expedition and this one did not disappoint. Ireland is amazing and the Hidden Northwest had so many great runs, amazing lodging, great food and three of the best guides. Everyone was fully engaged, friendly and outgoing. I hope to do the other Ireland itinerary along with many more Rogue Expedition trips. I highly recommend.

The Balkans were beautiful and I definitely would recommend this trip. All the guides and support staff were top notch. The meals and accommodations were great too. I will say, compared to other Rogue trips that I’ve done, this one involved more hiking than running. This wasn’t a bad thing but just be aware if you sign up for this trip.

This trip far exceeded my expectations. From the choice of hotels, to the choice of running trails, to the choice of restaurants, I was more than happy and satisfied. The guides also exceeded my expectations from their local knowledge, their professionalism, level of organization and attention to detail were top notch. They have earned a repeat customer for sure. The best way to see and truly understand a country is on foot, interacting with local residents. I left feeling that I had seen and truly understood Ireland in a way that was physically very challenging and intellectually stimulating.

It was amazing to see a part of Europe that I did not know existed. High mountains, trees and meadows, large and beautiful lakes. And to get to know the culture too and the local cuisine.
