Welcome to Run Iceland!
Please see below for pretty much everything that you need to know in advance of your upcoming adventure. You can also click "My Trips" at the top of this page to access and edit your personal information and view/pay your remaining balance at any time.
And of course, feel free to refresh yourself on the full itinerary and inclusions/exclusions any time at this link: https://www.roguexpeditions.com/running-tours/europe/iceland/
Landscapes: Ancient (and active!) volcanoes, wild rivers, sea cliffs, sweeping tundra, crashing waterfalls, bubbling hot springs and, at the time of year you'll be visiting, 20 hours of daylight each day!
Food & drink: It's possible to find most anything in the city these days, but traditional cuisine focuses heavily upon seafood, lamb dishes, fresh bread and skyr, a dairy product that looks like yogurt but that is technically a cheese. You'll have no problem finding local beer, traditional spirits (including Brennivin, a potent flavored schnapps nicknamed ‘black death) and good coffee is abundant. You'll have the chance to try it all!
Weather: The summer weather in Iceland is at its most stable, but wind, rain and fog are always a possibility (as are brilliantly clear days!). Temperatures in July will rarely rise above 65F/18C with lows typically around 50F/10C and daylight hangs around for 20 hours per day.
Connectivity: Wifi is good and abundant in hotels as well as most restaurants, coffee shops, etc.
Accommodation: The accommodation will be a mix of mid-range bed & breakfast and lodge-style set in beautiful places. You can expect clean, cozy, welcoming places each night at which to relax, recover and prepare for the next big day..
Once you have booked your flight, please submit your flight info in your "tasks" list on your WeTravel account by the task deadline.
US citizens will need a passport with at least 6 months validity; no visas are required. Citizens of other countries should check with their consulate for details.
Your flight should arrive in Reykjavik no later than 9am on July 31st. This allows time for immigration, baggage claim and the one hour bus journey to downtown Reykjavik, where you’ll meet your guides and transfer to our hotel. If you arrive later than specified you will be responsible for getting yourself to our first hotel. If you arrive before the 31st, we recommend staying downtown - that will make it very easy to meet up with the group!
The FlyBus will take you from the airport to downtown and coordinates with all flight arrivals, so you can be certain that there will be a bus for you when you arrive. We recommend buying your ticket in advance; no need to worry about flight delays or changes as your ticket will work on any FlyBus.
The group meetup will be at 1pm at BSI Bus Terminal, which you can reach directly with the FlyBus. There is luggage storage there in case you'd like to stash your things and wander around town before our meet up!.
Please book your departure flight on August 7th no earlier than 9:30am. Breakfast will be at the hotel and you can book your Fly Bus back to the airport according to your morning or afternoon flights. We recommend booking the Hotel Pick-up option. We are staying at Hotel Natura. If you are extending your stay in Iceland, you can easily arrange transport from our final hotel.
READ THIS: Packing (light) tips for your next adventure
GENERAL THINGS TO CONSIDER
*This is an active trip with lots of time outdoors. While you’ll want to pack some non-running attire for dinners there is no real need for anything dressy.
*Any type of luggage is fine, but remember: no one ever wishes they’d brought more stuff! Stick to the essentials and pack only what you need. A good general rule: if your luggage is too big or heavy for you to carry and lift by yourself, it’s too much stuff :)
*Have some sort of ‘day bag,’ whether it’s a small backpack, messenger bag, etc. It should be big enough to carry money, a camera, a water bottle, and a jacket – something you can keep with you in the vehicle and that can come with you for sightseeing excursions, etc.
*Though we always hope for great weather, Iceland is a wet and often chilly place! Waterproof rain gear and layers are key!
*Average temperatures in July are highs of 57 F (14 C) / lows of 49 F (9 C) - though we may get lucky with warmer days, pack with the assumption that you’ll generally be too chilly rather than too warm!
CLOTHES
*2-3 pairs running shorts and/or 1-2 pairs running tights/capris
*2-3 short sleeve running shirts/tank tops + jog bras and 1-2 long sleeve running shirts
*2-3 non running shirts/tops
*2 pairs pants or jeans or skirts
*1 warm jacket (down or fleece)
*1 waterproof rain jacket (can double as a running jacket)
*1 lightweight jacket or pullover
*Underwear
*1 set of sleepwear
*Swimsuit
ACCESSORIES + SHOES
*1 pair trail running shoes + 1 pair flipflops + 1 pair non-running shoes (for dinners and whatnot - expect your trail shoes to often be muddy and wet)
*6-7 pairs socks
*Running hat
*Sunglasses
*Buff and/or warm hat
*Day bag
*Shower towels are provided by the hotels but please bring a small pack towel for rain/hot springs! Otherwise you'll be using your shirt to dry off with :)
*Running gloves
*Hydration pack that can carry at least 1.5L water plus an extra layer, camera, a snack, etc.
TOILETRIES
*Shampoo/soap/conditioner
*Toothbrush/toothpaste
*Brush/comb
*Feminine products
*Razor
*Contacts/solution/glasses if needed
*Moleskin or bandaids – we’ll have some of this for the group, but blisters are a common problem and it’s good to have some of your own on hand
*Any other medication you may need
DOCUMENTS
*Passport (US citizens must have 6 months validity from your departure date from Iceland)
*1-2 credit/debit cards (make sure to call your bank the week before departure, tell them the dates that you will be overseas. This way they won’t put a security hold on your card).
*Contact info for your guides (provided prior to departure)
*Copies of flight itineraries
OTHER STUFF
*Phone and/or camera + charger
*Reading/writing material
*Ziploc bags for waterproofing phone/camera during the runs + plastic bags for separating wet gear in your bag
*Ear plugs or headphones if you are a light sleeper/your roommate snores
*Electrical adapter (2 round prongs, like this). Can find these at REI, Target, Amazon, etc. Bring more than one to account for multiple devices, and because it’s likely that you’ll leave one in a hotel room at some point!
*If there is any special type of trail snacks or fuel that you require, best to bring it from home!
