THE PACKING LIST

READ THIS: Packing (light) tips for your next adventure

GENERAL THINGS TO CONSIDER

Temperatures will likely be around 40-50 F at night and in the early mornings and 60-75 F during the day, though there is always a chance it can be significantly colder and even snow up at higher elevations in September - layers are key!

We strongly recommend bringing a hydration pack so that you can carry snacks, water, camera, extra layers, etc.

If you don't own one, the best way to find a good fit is to go try them on! Head to your nearest run specialty or outdoor retailer- you'll know when you find the right fit.

CLOTHES

  • 3-4 sets of running clothes (shorts/tights + tanks/short sleeve shirts + 1-2 long sleeve shirt + jog bras)

  • 1 running  jacket (if it looks like a wet week, you'll want something waterproof!)

  • 2-3 sets of casual non-running clothes (shorts & pants, short sleeve shirts, 1  long sleeve shirt)

  • 1 warm jacket (down or fleece) - essential for these high altitude mountain mornings

  • Underwear

  • Sleepwear

  • Swimsuit (optional for post-run lake dips and hot springs)

  • 5-6 pairs socks

ACCESSORIES + SHOES

  • 1 pair trail running shoes + 1 pair non-running shoes (optional)

  • 1 pair flip flops (sandals w/straps are ideal for casual hikes and walks and lake activities, or you can wear running shoes)

  • Running hat + beanie

  • Fitness watch + charger

  • Lightweight gloves for mountain running

  • Sunglasses

  • Hydration pack (1.5L carrying capacity at least but 2L or four 500ml flasks is best)

  • Reading  material

  • Phone/camera  +  charger

TOILETRIES

  • Toothbrush/toothpaste

  • Brush/comb

  • Any medication that you may need

  • Feminine products

MONEY - HOW MUCH WILL YOU NEED?

Most everything is already paid for and credit cards are widely accepted. You shouldn’t need much in the way of cash.

The only things you may need to purchase will be alcohol, any personal snacks that you may want (we'll make a stop or two at a grocery store), souvenirs and tips if you choose (never expected but always appreciated!).

CALIFORNIA SIERRA NEVADA: THE BASICS

State: California

Country: United States

Altitude: 7,000-11,000 ft.

Landscapes:
Mammoth Lakes & Yosemite are just two regions we'll be visiting along California's dramatic and famed Sierra Nevada mountain range. You’ll experience an incredibly diverse environment of high desert, remnants of volcanic activity, wild rivers through vast meadows, alpine lakes, waterfalls, and the glacier-sculpted, granite peaks that distinguish California's Sierra Nevada mountains.

Food:
Breakfasts will be hearty with plenty of options, including things such as fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, eggs, pancakes, sausage, and always plenty of coffee. Lunches will be post-run picnic style - sandwiches, fruit, salty and sweet snacks, etc. Dinners are a combination of hearty mountain dishes featuring produce from California’s Central Valley, locally raised meats, fresh mountain trout and salmon, and plentiful vegetarian options but please make sure you indicate any special dietary accommodations when you register!

Drinks:
California (and the Eastern Sierra, especially) is home to fantastic craft breweries, small-batch roasters, and mountain-town distilleries. We encourage you to enjoy the local flavors!

You’ll have opportunities to stop for provisions throughout the week so you can stock up on any beverages you’d like to enjoy during downtime. Coffee is always provided at breakfast, and we’ll make sure you have access to clean drinking water on all runs.

Weather:
Generally speaking you can expect bright, sunny California days with temps around 40-50F/4-10C at night, 65-80F/18-27C during the day and low humidity, though September can still surprise with significant temperature swings in both directions. We’ll touch base the week prior to the trip with a more accurate weather forecast.

Connectivity:  You will have WiFi at all of our accommodations, but please expect little to no cell service while out on the trails, specifically days 3 & 5 up in the Yosemite High Country. A great opportunity to unplug!

Accommodation:  We will stay at two unique properties during this trip, each one intimate and welcoming in a way that only cozy mountain lodges can be. The first features a mix of cozy yet stylish lodge rooms and suites in the heart of Mammoth Lakes with recovery amenities including a hot tub, sauna, and other recovery tools on site - a runner's dream! Rooms here are double occupancy with a limited number of single rooms; you can indicate preference and we will assign rooms as registrations are received.

The second and last location is a rustic and charming mountain lodge nestled amongst aspen trees and towering High Sierra peaks. Relax by the fireplace in the lodge's common area or out on the patio to listen to the gentle flow of nearby creeks, and soak in the crisp alpine air. Rooms here are also double occupancy with a limited number of single rooms available.

The National Park: Yosemite National Park has strict trail guidelines and seasonal restrictions. Stay on designated paths, respect wildlife corridors, refrain from running through the meadows, leave what you find, and follow Leave No Trace principles. Always ask before attempting to swim in any water feature, don't assume; not all water features are safe to swim in and many people drown in Yosemite each year. Mountain running etiquette includes making noise in Black Bear habitat and yielding to hikers.

Fun Facts:

  • Mammoth Lakes is home to Mammoth Mountain, one of the largest ski resorts in California, with over 3,500 acres of skiable terrain.

  • Yosemite has been inhabited for over 3,000 years by Native American tribes, including the Southern Sierra Miwok and Mono Paiute, who called this place home long before it became a park

  • The majority of visitors to Yosemite only go to Yosemite Valley, which makes up only 1% of the entire park. Thus, the part of the park we will be running in, the High Country, is a much more wild, less crowded, stunning hidden gem of Yosemite National Park.

  • Tuolumne Meadows sits at roughly 8,600 feet (2,600 m), making it one of the highest subalpine meadows in the Sierra Nevada.

  • With elevations ranging from 7,000 to 11,000 ft, Mammoth Lakes is a prime spot for altitude training, helping runners improve endurance and oxygen efficiency.

  • The region's historic and current presence of volcanic activity is evident by its numerous natural hot springs, hills of Obsidian (volcanic glass), and ancient lava flows and cinder cones.

  • The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) drew thousands of prospectors into the Sierra Nevada, including the Tuolumne River watershed. Old mining trails, cabins, and machinery can still be found in some parts of the Sierra foothills between Bishop and Tuolumne.

Wildlife you might encounter includes Black Bears, Mule Deer, Yellow-Bellied Marmots, Foxes, Squirrels, the endangered Pika (like small rabbits), Rattlesnakes, and the occasional Bobcat or Mountain Lion (very rare) - we follow strict food storage and noise protocols. Rattlesnakes are uncommon at elevations above 7,000ft and Mountain Lions are rare but present. Wildlife sightings add magic to trail experiences but require being enjoyed from a respectful distance. Do not feed the wildlife.

EXTRAS

If you have the time, we encourage you to come early or stay late. While we don't offer an official early arrival package for this trip, we're happy to provide suggestions for extra activities and tips and tricks for exploring more of the National Park.

If you're interested in extending your stay, you might consider:

  • Registering for Mammoth Trailfest! The town's local trail race and community gathering happens each year in mid-late September and offers a variety of race distances from the vertical kilometer to a 50k with immaculate race energy and vibes - a great reason to stick around town a little longer after the trip!

  • Exploring more of Yosemite National Park, particularly Yosemite Valley to see El Capitan, Tunnel View, and many other famous sites that are not part of this guided trip.

  • Experiencing some of the pristine, wilderness trails in and around Mammoth and June Lakes that aren't on our permit

  • Take a detour trip to Lake Tahoe for more incredible High Sierra trails and lake dips

  • Visit the abandoned gold-mining ghost town of Bodie

We're more than happy to provide our recommendations and hacks on trails, transportation, accommodations, restaurants, park entrance fees/seasonal information, and other fun activities OR connect you with local operators who can arrange these experiences for you.
